Description
Live Sessions: Volume 01 is a collection of songs we have released on our YouTube channel. Most of the songs on the album were recorded live and have received millions of views online. We could not have put this album together without the support of our Patreon community. Thank you to everyone who has believed in us, supported our family through this season of not being able to perform live shows, and sent us notes of encouragement about what our music has meant to them. You truly are the reason we are able to keep creating music.
Discography
Jolene, No Roots, High Sierra, and Gentle on my Mind were recorded at the Chapmans studio, Digigrass, in Ozark, MO. All other songs were performed live at various locations throughout the Ozarks. The sound was mixed by Troy Dixon. Karen Petersen played bass, Katie Petersen sang lead and harmony vocals and played fiddle, Ellen Petersen Haygood sang lead and harmony vocals and played banjo, Matt Petersen sang lead and harmony vocals and played guitar, Julianne Petersen sang lead and harmony vocals and played mandolin, Emmett Franz sang lead and harmony vocals and played dobro.

The live performances of “Near the Cross” and “Farther Along” on this cd are my favorite versions of these timeless hymns. Country music legends have recorded these songs, from Willie Nelson to George Jones; Connie Smith to Dolly to the Stanley Brothers. Nobody else sings this old time stuff as pretty as the Petersens. What’s really nice is that everything else they do is great too.

There are both studio and live recordings on this CD, but they’re so good live I sometimes have to think, Is this live or studio? I would go into detail about how incredible this album is, but that would take too long complementing all six members who do a wonderful job, but I can see why Harry Connick, Jr. said, “You make me proud to be from this great land.”

I found a treasure. I teach infectious diseases to university and medical students and when everything went online due to COVID-19, I found myself in this global health crisis missing the daily face to face interactions with my students, colleagues and friends. So I went to YouTube in hope of finding a video, hopefully something new that I hadn’t played countless times, by Alison Krauss, whose music I love and have followed over her career, buying everything she has done (often in multiple copies to share with family and friends), and having attended many of her concerts with family and friends all starting from the time she was fairly unknown until now with 27 Grammy’s. Instead, I accidently found another treasure and now have an additional musical favorite, “The Petersens”, who were posting and have continued to post videos during COVID-19 and have made me, and I’m sure countless others, happy with their discovery. The Petersens are a wonderful family band of awesome musicians and singers with an amazing ability to harmonize with each other. I’ve told friends that in the past I could “take or leave” country/bluegrass music – not nearly a condemnation, but also not a hearty endorsement. The Petersens have changed that assessment. This CD brings me back to simpler and more sincere times earlier in my life, and has re-awakened my love for harmonies, music produced by skilled use of instruments, and faith in what people who care about and resect one another can create.
